About Merck

Whether it's healthy food or fresh drinking water: High hygiene standards require flawless quality measurements. That's why Merck KGaA has been manufacturing test strips for chemical analysis for decades. These are particularly suitable for preliminary tests for larger investigations and for rapid tests. They are used, among other things, in laboratories for water quality determination. Together with q.beyond (then still q.beyond subsidiary Incloud) and the colorimetry specialist Techkon, Merck created the MQuant® StripScan smartphone app. This retail a mobile, cost-effective way to perform rapid tests with reliable results via smartphone app analysis. Professional measurements are thus no longer reserved for large institutions, but thanks to their portability and affordable price, can now also be carried out more easily in developing countries.

The project

The MQuant®StripScan app was developed to be cross-platform and is available for Android and iOS. The associated cloud application is powered by Amazon Web Services. The application is also supported by Techkon ColorCatcher technology, which uses color reference maps to determine ambient lighting conditions, thus enabling precise conclusions about the measured color. For the first time, analytical chemistry in the field of water and food testing can offer a measurement method that is entirely smartphone-based, simplifying the daily work of many scientists. The product benefits both scientists in state-of-the-art laboratories and the food industry in developing countries. The MQuant® StripScan conceptalso impressed the jury of the Mobile Business Award at the University of St. Gallen. This award recognizes solutions that have improved or transformed business processes through mobile business solutions.

Customer requirements

  • An app as an affordable and efficient solution that delivers fast results, suitable for users without extensive prior knowledge
  • A scalable cloud backend for secure data storage and synchronization of measurement data across various end devices
  • Documentation and analysis functions as well as easy data transfer via an associated web dashboard

Project goals

  • Quickly, cost-effectively and regardless of location, make statements about the quality of water samples
  • Precise determination of the measured color for result reading, taking into account the ambient lighting
  • More independent users: no complex hardware is needed that requires technical expertise

From idea to implementation: Our project highlights

Easy to use

Easy to use

The app guides users step by step through the measurement process, thus preventing any potential misuse of the test strips.

Techkon ColorCatcher technology

Techkon ColorCatcher technology

Using Techkon ColorCatcher technology, the app determines the measurement value for the user through the interaction of the camera and a color reference card.

Database and analysis function

Database and analysis function

The app transfers the measurement data to the associated database, where it is available for comparisons and analyses and can then be further processed.
