Via the VDV eTicket Service
VDV eTicket Service GmbH (VDV-ETS) operates and coordinates the technical systems for eTicket Germany, the electronic fare management system for public transport. An eTicket is an electronic ticket or travel authorisation for public transport. Previously, the eTicket was displayed on smartphones as a 2D barcode. The drawback: these barcode tickets could not be protected against copying. Therefore, in addition to the ticket, an identification document had to be checked during ticket inspections. VDV-ETS developed a concept, implemented in collaboration with the former INCLOUD (now q.beyond), to ensure this copy protection and thus significantly improve the security and speed of ticket inspections. For this purpose, VDV eTicket Service and q.beyond developed the Mobile Ticketing Crypto-Service, or MOTICS for short.
The project
"Cashless Payment, No Queuing at the Machine": Digital ticketing solutions via smartphone are becoming increasingly popular in public transport. But what happens behind the scenes to ensure that end customers quickly and securely receive their personal, counterfeit-proof ticket? Here you'll find a prime example of the dream team of app and cloud: barely visible to end users, but with a huge impact.
The core application (SCE-MS) runs on AWS and was implemented using Spring Boot and React. The SCE app libraries were developed natively for both Android and iOS.
Secure Crypto Environment (SCE) makes a significant contribution to the
digital infrastructure of public transport, but also beyond, for all applications that rely on copy-protected digital tickets. Deutsche Bahn, for example, plans to integrate SCE into its DB Navigator app
Customer requirements
- Development of the app library "SCE" (Secure Crypto Environment), which equips the user's smartphone with a cryptographic signature function
- Two test apps for testing the library
- SCE Management System (SCE-MS) for linking SCE and security management of (((eTicket Germany – the core application of the project)
- Interface to a 3rd-party server and a web interface for the SCE-MS
Project goals
- Protect barcode tickets against copying
- Speed up ticket control
- Secure high-priced tickets on your smartphone
- Making the purchase of eTickets more attractive

From idea to implementation: Our project highlights
High security
The SCE management system assesses the suitability of the user's smartphone as a host for the Secure Crypto Environment from a security perspective.
Versatile
The SCE offers participating apps and other partners (such as Google Pay) cryptographic functions to ensure the copy protection of barcodes and more efficient ticket control.
“With q.beyond, we have a highly specialized company at our side that implements integrated software development for apps and cloud systems. This is precisely the focus we need now for the implementation of MOTICS, in order to provide the public transport sector with cryptographically secure electronic tickets on smartphones as quickly as possible.”
